Magazines: Heat CSP

Introduction - Heat Media pack

1) Look at the Heat Media Pack. Go to page 2: the Heat mission. Write three things that Heat offers its readers under 'print'.

Heat offers it's readers travel, food, fitness, wellbeing and homes.

2) Now go to page 3 of the Media Pack - celebrity focus. What does the page say that Heat offers readers?

It offers heat readers conversation starters.

3) Now look at page 4 of the Heat Media Pack. What other content does Heat magazine offer its readers aside from celebrity news?

They offer readers that aren't celebrities advice and beauty expertise.

4) Look at page 5. What is Heat magazine's audience profile? Write all the key details of their audience here.

They believe that they have 'extensive and highly credible entertainment' which will draw in their audience they also believe it is the hottest thing to watch which will also attract audience.

Media language

1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?

The magazine includes bright colours and a neat setting this draws the audience in because they are having a themed concept in what they audience and they'd like.

2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The colour scheme is bright and pastel colours themed with their product but the background is more vibrant with a bit of a darker colour the writing fonts include both san serif and sans.

3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

It creates interest to make the product seem better than it actually is, taken at neat angles and its editing is made to do so too this is what creates the interest.

4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.

Heat magazine seems like it's used more for gossip than production for products because their pages mainly include talking about scandals and gossip and has more of a teenager girl kind of vibe for gossip. Tatler however seems more like for celebrities and rich adults the pages and front cover specifically made for product promotion featuring the vibes of the products they want to sell too.

Media Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.

Celebrities Danny Jones, Maura Higgins, Megan Markle and Prince Harry.

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

They can be represented more negatively for example Danny Jones and Maura Higgins are rumoured to have a connection or have chemistry when working however the magazine will take the story they got and reword it to make it seem like something more than it actually is therefore getting in between the 2's personal lives and changing their chemistry when they were working into them having stronger feelings.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Woman in the magazine are mainly portrayed like the bad guys with front covers saying things like 'Surgery shock' 'Why Kanye will never let Kim go' or 'Megan another scandal will break us'. Unlike the 19's when woman were portrayed like housewives and caretakers in adverts and magazines now in the 20th century woman are portrayed as powerful being for adverts to make chances of the product being bough increase or they're portrayed as terrible people in gossip magazines, talk shows and more or they will just be considered a celebrity with no drama.

4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)

Tater represents their social class with the expectancy of their clients to be upper class or more (Like royalty) because their products may be really expensive or made for a specific social class because that's how the company sees it should be done. Heat is made for Middle/Upper class made to both promote product, celebrities and maybe drama. It mainly includes drama especially on the front cover because it will draw peoples attention to get them to start reading about the interesting gossip then go through the rest of the magazine.

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

Non celebrities, Non posh people, Non rich class and Non royals.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?

This represents Britain as a comfy place for all with the qualities the company has when in reality it's probably not like that for everyone but that is how it is portrayed.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler?

Some audience groups may feel offended because only a variety of people can model and represent the company and maybe only a specific amount of working groups can afford their products.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?

The issues are that the covers are the same thing, in the same font with people in the same class so it will become boring to views because every cover is almost identical.
