Audience Effects Theory

Audience Effects Theory

1. Write a definition of a passive audience

A passive audience is when the audience take in information for the media.

2) Write a definition of an active audience

An active audience is the modern and generally and accepted view that audiences interreact with.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory

The hypodermic needle is when the audience is always passive and will always take the message from the producer

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you.

I think the show Falling into your smile falls under the relationships category because it's about caring for others and forming relationships. However it's also like Identity and Diversion/Entertainment, identity because it has things in common with real life things on the other hand it also clashes with being entertained away from normal life because most of the show is mainly presenting the main side of it.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

From the Blue Planet clip out of the 3 Vs it consists of Voyeuristic Pleasure because it shows us watching the sea creatures (secretly or not). I believe when people watch this they would most likely have the hypodermic needle theory because they are watching the documentary taking in what the narrator says and believes all information explained.

Extension Task

6) Finally, think about the hypodermic needle theory. Do you think most audiences believe everything they see in the media? Why? Explain your answer and try to argue both sides.

I don't think the audience would believe everything they see on the media as most of what is said either isn't true or is a very exaggerated answer. On the other hand I believe it's good to listen to the media sometimes it could be true and at least half of the answers we try to get are off the media or Artificial Intelligence used by some people.
