Coursework: Summer Project 2025

Research Music Videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

The dystopian storyline of people being controlled and silenced engages the audience by creating tension and drama. It makes viewers emotionally invested as they follow the characters’ struggle against oppression, reflecting themes of rebellion and freedom.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.

In I Wish I Knew by Years & Years, close-up shots capture emotion while wider shots set the mood. The mise-en-scène (CLAMPS) adds to the intimacy: casual costumes and minimal makeup feel authentic, soft lighting creates warmth, expressive movement shows emotion, and the simple domestic setting makes the video relatable.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

Fast cuts and jumpy transitions create a sense of chaos and energy, engaging the audience with unpredictability. The surreal visuals and quick pace match the experimental tone of the music, keeping viewers intrigued.

Music video 4: Your choice

Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc. If you're not sure which video to use you could watch some of the following:
You may also want to look a completely different, creative approach to music video - such as these Lego stop motion productions and how they use narrative:

The video uses glitch-like effects, upside-down cityscapes, and shifting camera angles to emphasise the theme of breaking norms. Quick zooms, perspective changes, and dynamic movements immerse viewers in the song’s intensity, highlighting Stray Kids’ rebellious concept.

2) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen: Hall Of Fame - Stray Kids

Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): Both

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): Reaching your goal even though it'll seem out of reach

Actors/performers you plan to use: Friends and myself

Locations: London and Jamaica

Costume/make-up/props required: None of the above

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too.

My music video will focus on the struggles of a person who feels like they are constantly falling short of their goals and dreams. The main character begins their journey with determination, filled with excitement and belief that their passion will take them somewhere. However, after facing multiple rejections and obstacles, they start to believe that their ambitions are unreachable. This sense of defeat builds up slowly, creating an emotional narrative where the audience can connect to the frustration of wanting something so badly yet always being pushed away from it.

Throughout the video, the character’s passion will remain present, even if it seems buried beneath feelings of failure. They will attempt to give up, walking away from their dream as if it no longer matters, but visually the video will continue to show subtle signs of how much that goal still means to them. For example, they might pass by reminders of what they once wanted, such as posters, objects, or old memories, or we might see flashbacks of moments when they were happiest pursuing their passion. This repetition highlights the idea that true passion cannot be erased, even when rejection is constant and painful.

The video will also include a journey of self-discovery. After distancing themselves from their dream, the character will travel or move through different places, trying to find new meaning. These sequences will represent searching for identity outside of their ambition and will act as a metaphor for rebuilding self-belief. However, no matter where they go, they realise that their original dream continues to call them back. The turning point comes when they finally recognise that the rejection they faced was not the end, but part of the journey that makes them stronger.

In conclusion, the video will send a message to the community that if you do not take charge of your own goals, you may miss out on something far more meaningful. That even with obstacles persistence leads to growth, resilience, and a greater chance of success. The story reminds us that pursuing passion is always worth it.

Summer project deadline: all tasks above due in the second lesson back in September.
